The internet began as a tool to improve our lives. Then came the smartphone—suddenly, the online world was in everyone’s pocket. Today, it has become both a real and perceived threat to our well-being. Reports now suggest that modern AI tools may even reduce our IQ. Children are becoming immersed in a social world of unknown personalities, often with harmful effects. “Social contagion” is a new disease.

Even seemingly harmless content—cartoons, games, instructive videos, and humorous clips—can become a ceaseless quest for entertainment. What was once a digital babysitter is now, for many children, a source of distraction and dependency. While online learning holds enormous potential, the reliability of information is increasingly uncertain.

How can a child discern what’s true? With the rise of AI-generated video, this question becomes even more critical. The ability to perceive reality accurately may become one of the defining challenges of their future.

Fortunately, there are ways for children to develop the tools needed to meet this challenge—and most of them lie outside the digital world.

As a music teacher, I speak from experience: learning a musical instrument is one of the most powerful of those tools.

Like a smartphone, a musical instrument is a tool—but it demands active engagement. Playing music isn’t passive. It requires effort, attention, and self-reflection. A child learns not only notes and rhythms, but also patience, perseverance, physical control, and self-awareness. It becomes a mirror, revealing strengths, weaknesses, and the capacity to grow.

Unlike TikTok, a musical instrument doesn’t offer quick, dopamine-driven hits. But what it does offer is deeper: real skill, personal achievement, and even joy. That kind of learning builds real intelligence—not artificial.

So to parents eager to equip their child with the latest digital device, consider this instead: put a musical instrument in their hands. It might teach them about the most important subject of all—themselves.
